In the absence of insurrection (a violent uprising against an authority or government) and war (a state of armed conflict between different nations or states or different groups within a nation or state) the two greatest threats to democracy and freedom are bureaucracy (a system of government in which most of the important decisions are made by state officials rather than by elected representatives) and taxes (a compulsory contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers’ income and business profits or added to the cost of some goods, services, and transactions). Bureaucracy rules by regulation (a rule or directive made and maintained by an authority), which is not reviewed or necessarily approved by any majority consensus of the population. Taxes take your money and put it in the hands of a bureaucracy.
In 2016, the average Canadian family will earn $105,236 in income and pay a total of $45,167 in taxes (42.9%). (https://www.fraserinstitute.org/studies/canadians-celebrate-tax-freedom-day-on-june-7-2016)
Consider, when the tax burden rises to 100%, the populous will be totally enslaved (slave – a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them) by a bureaucracy.
In the absence of war and insurrection, we should be very concerned about the growth of the bureaucracy and the rise in taxes.
42.9% now, and a bureaucracy that continues to grow. When do you think you might become concerned (50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%–?100%?)?
